Preventing Illness in Puppies and Kittens

Up-to-date vaccinations will keep your pet safe from common diseases. When you bring in your puppy or kitten for a wellness exam, our veterinarian will explain the vaccine schedule. Once your pet is vaccinated, it's important to continue taking them for regular checkups so that any problems can be caught early. In addition, practice good hygiene by keeping your pet's food bowls and living area clean.

Common Illnesses in Puppies & Kittens

Here are some illnesses to watch out for in pets. If you see the symptoms in your pet, call Central Virginia Veterinary Clinic immediately.

Parvovirus: A serious virus that affects puppies and can be deadly if not treated promptly. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea (often bloody), lethargy, loss of appetite, fever, and dehydration. Treatment typically involves IV fluids and antibiotics.

Panleukopenia: A contagious viral disease that affects cats of all ages but is especially deadly in kittens. Symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhea (often bloody), lethargy, anorexia (loss of appetite), and dehydration. Treatment typically involves hospitalization with IV fluids and supportive care.

Upper respiratory infections: Also known as "kitty colds," these viruses affect the nose, throat, sinuses, windpipe (trachea), or voice box (larynx) in cats. Symptoms include runny nose or eyes (discharge may be watery or thick), sneezing, coughing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing. Treatment typically involves rest, plenty of fluids, humidifier or steam treatments for congestion relief, and medication.

Feline leukemia virus: A dangerous virus that is spread through contact with an infected cat's saliva or other body fluids. Symptoms include weight loss, loss of fur, diarrhea, and excessive thirst.
